Clough-Hanson Gallery at Rhodes College is very excited to announce its first show of the spring season: “Jon Haddock: Cartoon Violence”
The show will run from January 16th through February 18th, 2004. The artist will present a free lecture on his work in Blount Auditorium in Buckman Hall at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 15th. The reception for the show will be Friday, January 16th, from 6-8 p.m. (Please note the new time for receptions at Clough-Hanson.)
Clough-Hanson Gallery will premiere Jon Haddock’s “Cartoon Violence” series. The computer rendered images from this series are taken from traumatic events retold by Haddock using the vocabulary of 1930’s cartoons. The series is a continuation of Haddock’s concern with violence and the way it functions in our culture: how images that we experience through the media can become as powerful an influence as the events we actually experience. Haddock’s work also promotes the role of the artist to subvert ownership of imagery in order to reclaim and rebuild these public moments. The images are rebuilt in an effort to experience the images in a fresh way. The show includes images of high profile violence as well as more obscure incidences of violence which allows the artist to negotiate the very tricky territory between public and private loss. Images of small town America crime is paired with the infamous images of Tupac Shakur’s murder, September 11th, as well as suicide bombings.
