Clough-Hanson Gallery at Rhodes College is very excited to announce its second show of the fall season: Jan Hankins: Sleepless.
The show will run from October 20 through December 6, 2006.
The artist will present a free lecture on his work in Blount Auditorium in Buckman Hall at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 19.
The reception for the show will be held in the gallery from 6 - 8 p.m., Friday October 20.
For years Jan Hankins has been one of the most respected of the city’s artists. His dizzyingly complicated compositions combine with his lush use of paint to create some of the best paintings being made in the South today. His show at Clough-Hanson Gallery will present a new body of work where Hankins uses altered toys as models for his imagery. The centered, more singular, paintings show Hankins acerbic wit and painting skills and at their most focused. Hankins is well known for weaving his passionate political views through his complex images; these paired down the images are certainly no less pointed or cunning.
Hankins’ one person shows include Bummer at Gallery 314 in Memphis, Out of the Janitor’s Closet at AMUM’s Artlab, Bummer at the Ruby Green Gallery, Oil and Rubble at the Tennessee Arts Commission Gallery in Nashville as well as his many solo shows at Jay Etkin Gallery on South Main. Additionally he has shown in a number of group exhibitions: Leaves of Crabgrass at Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center in Buffalo, NY, the 2001 Brooks Perspectives show curated by Sam Gapmayer, Calculus of Risk organized by David Hall for Delta Axis @ Marshall Arts, and the 42nd Delta Exhibition at the Arkansas Arts Center.
Gallery hours for Clough-Hanson are Tuesdays through Saturdays, 11:00 - 5:00 p.m. The gallery is closed Sundays and Mondays. Admission to the gallery and lectures are always free to the public.
