Clough-Hanson Gallery at Rhodes College is very excited to announce its second show of the season: Jillian Conrad: The Solid Matter of a Celestial Body.
The Solid Matter of a Celestial Body will run from October 19 through December 5, 2007.
The artist will present a lecture on her work in Blount Auditorium in Buckman Hall on Thursday, October 18th at 7 p.m.
The reception for the show will be held in the gallery from 6 - 8 p.m., Friday October 19, 2007.
New York artist Jillian Conrad’s exhibition will feature new sculptures made during her recent residencies at the Marie Walsh Sharpe Foundation in New York and at the Santa Fe Art Institute in New Mexico. Conrad’s sculptures build connections between the ordinary stuff of everyday life and the singularity of the human experience: the wonderful mess of a construction site to the quiet spread of the morning sunlight. Her current work uses installations to explore the fine edge between sculpture and the viewer by linking together seemingly incongruous materials such as cardboard and reflective silver. The sparks caused by these materials allow a hidden integrity to be revealed. In the artist’s words, “The Solid Matter of a Celestial Body uses the forms and images of rocks as a way of representing the daily accretion of human emotions and experiences that shape us.”
Jillian Conrad received her BA from St John’s College in Santa Fe and her MFA in sculpture at Rhodes Island School of Design. In 2006 she was awarded a studio in the Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation Space Program, and in 2007 she had a residency at the Santa Fe Art Institute. In 1995 she received a prestigious Thomas J. Watson Fellowship that allowed her to study abroad for a year in the UK, Denmark, Israel and India. Her work has been featured in a number of exhibitions including Here and Elsewhere at the Bronx Museum, Hollow Mountain at Real Art Ways in Hartford, Connecticut, Open Maps at Coburn Gallery at Colorado College, in New Work at Grant Selwyn Gallery in New York.
