Rhodes believes that study abroad should be within the financial reach of all students. The Buckman Center has created this section to help parents understand the options for financing a study abroad program. The cost of study abroad depends on several factors, including the price of program, portability of financial aid, inflation rates abroad, cost of living, and the value of the U.S. dollar.
For non-Rhodes programs (CIEE, IES, SIT, IFSA-Butler, etc.), detailed cost information can be found on the provider’s website. If cost is a major factor, explore less expensive locations (countries, cities), or different program types (direct enroll or exchange). Contact the Buckman Center for International Education if you are having difficulty identifying the complete cost of a program. Financial Aid
The Portability of Financial Aid Chart (PDF) quickly indicates which programs enable the transferring of Rhodes institutional aid and Federal/State aid. Financial aid as granted by Rhodes applies to the Rhodes European Studies program, ISEP semester or year-long exchanges, and all Rhodes bilateral exchange programs. Students in the European Studies program pay their tuition and fees to Rhodes and receive financial aid as granted by Rhodes. Aid is limited to the amount that would be granted in support of a semester’s study at Rhodes. Students participating in Rhodes bilateral exchange or an ISEP semester or year-long exchange pay tuition (and in some cases room and board) to Rhodes, receiving financial aid as if they were at Rhodes. The payments to Rhodes meet the expenses of the exchange student from abroad while at Rhodes; the Rhodes student receives tuition or tuition, room, and board abroad.
Students enrolled in semester or year-long non-Rhodes programs may obtain non-campus-based Title IV funds for which the student may qualify. However, no Rhodes funds or campus-based Title IV assistance will be available. In order to continue any existing federal financial aid (e.g. Stafford Loan, Pell Grants, Parent Loans, etc.) when participating in a non-Rhodes program, students must complete the Consortium Agreement for Financial Aid form (found on the Apply Online page).
Scholarships
Rhodes College has established several scholarship funds with which to support its students on study abroad programs. There are both need-based and merit-based awards available. Award decisions are based upon a combination of financial need, academic merit, and program choice. Applicants may apply for multiple Rhodes scholarships; however, only one Rhodes Study Abroad scholarship will be awarded per student recipient. Program Fees and Billing
Program fees for Rhodes programs vary but generally include tuition and housing. Rhodes College reserves the right to cancel, alter, or amend any part of a Rhodes program or to increase fees should circumstances make these actions advisable or necessary. Please consult the faculty leader for the relevant Rhodes summer program for exact cost information.
Rhodes Express will bill each student through the student’s Rhodes account for the amount of the program once the student has been accepted to the program. In the event that a student chooses to withdraw from the program after being accepted, the student will be responsible for the entire cost of the program.
