Who is First-Generation: A Rhodes College first-generation student is defined as someone whose neither parent nor guardian completed a four-year college or university degree. Students may also self-identify as first-generation if your parent or guardian has limited exposure to higher education in the United States.

Events

  • FDOC (First Day of Class): Start your semester with energy and connection! FDOC is a Rhodes-First tradition held on the first day of classes each semester, designed to welcome first-generation students back to campus. These events celebrate new beginnings, build community, and set a positive tone for the academic year ahead.
  • National First-Generation Week: Every November, Rhodes College joins colleges and universities across the nation in celebrating First-Generation College Celebration Week. It’s a time to recognize and uplift the experiences of first-generation students—and to honor the faculty and staff who were the first in their families to graduate from college.
  • Mosiac Pinning Ceremony: The Mosaic Celebration celebrates each graduating senior as a unique member of the Rhodes community. It is open to all seniors and highlights members of historically marginalized students, first-generation trailblazers, student leaders of affinity organizations, and ACCESS graduates.
