The Constructed Still Life

Spring 2016

The overlapping and accidental paint splatters on the studio floor inspired my painting, 'The Constructed Still Life'. In that 24x19 piece, I sought to replicate the same effect on my still life and painting. I put the “floor inspired” side of the circle on the white wall to show how much paint had been build up over the years. When I started paint the still life, I added on my own artistic touch to the piece and started to paint the paint-splatters as abstract and overlapping. I once again created an overlapping effect by placing paint chips on top of the still life’s image and adding them into my painting. The result of the painting came from a realistic viewpoint but also added in my own style of abstracting the image. The piece plays with the different depths and seeks to confuse the viewer will different scales. The paint chips surround the piece and let the eye wander towards the plug in the wall, the only place where one can gather a sense of size or scale.
