General Description of Position:

The Rhodes Student Associate employed as the Visual Resources Center Project Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating various special and ongoing projects in the Art & Art History Department at Rhodes College. The Memphis Art Project (MAP) is the biggest special project within the Visual Resources Center. MAP was created and supported with funds from CODA. MAP is a website (www.memphisart.org) that is a beautifully designed way-finding device for public art to anyone interested in exploring the creative landmarks of Memphis. The RSA oversee several facets of the project including maintenance of the website, community engagement, marketing, photography, and data management.  The RSA will assist with supervising and scheduling the 3-5 student workers assigned to the Visual Resources Center (VRC), and will oversee any fellowship positions awarded to the department. This person will report directly to Rosie Meindl, the Visual Resources Curator.

The RSA will work to promote the activities of the Art & Art History Department across a variety of platforms including publications, social media, curated walking tours of student art, and in DLynx, the Rhodes College digital archive. This position will be a leadership role that will develop and maintain a robust and forward-thinking digital presence for the Art & Art History Department at Rhodes College. The RSA will design and implement a social media plan for the department’s Facebook page, as well as the social media platforms associated with the Memphis Art Project. Having a dedicated leader in this role will improve the visibility of Rhodes College’s creative students, faculty, and special initiatives. This visibility will help attract potential new students, engage alumni, and support the work of current students and faculty. The coordinator will oversee the production of digital content throughout the department and provide a layer of quality control as it enters the public realm via social media, publications, and DLynx. As the figurehead for the Memphis Art Project, this person will promote MAP as a public service and arts outreach initiative that creates awareness about the art department and Rhodes College in the Memphis community. The website has a lot of student interest, and provides a place where students with a variety of academic backgrounds can experiment with website design, metadata creation, photography, civic engagement, publicity, social media, and much more. The RSAP will improve the quality of the website and can efficiently coordinate student participants to create the best possible product and reflection of the college. 

 

Minimum Qualifications

The RSA will be responsible for coordinating digitization projects including student artwork and public artwork for the Memphis Art Project website. The RSAP will train student employees on digital photograph, scanning and image editing in Photoshop. The RSAP will be responsible for documenting these processes and creating training materials for future students. The RSAP will oversee the scheduling of the various digitization projects that occur in the VRC. The RSA will create content appropriate for a wide variety of social media platforms including announcements, promoting arts events on campus and citywide and other initiatives or events as requested by faculty. As a visual resources generalist, the RSA will provide support as needed to the day-to-day activities of the Visual Resources Center including scanning reading assignments and images for faculty, providing Artstor and other image database expertise to students and faculty, and other duties as assigned. The RSA will be tasked with implementing a social media plan for the department’s Facebook page, as well as the social media platforms associated with the Memphis Art Project.

Minimum Requirements

Candidates should have a strong background in digital photography, scanning, and image editing in Adobe Photoshop. The candidate should have experience working with Tumblr, Instagram, Facebook, twitter, and have an interest in experimenting with new platforms as they become available. This RSA should have excellent written, communication, interpersonal and leadership skills, as they will be responsible for supervising student employees and communicating with the public.
