General Description of Position:

Welcome to community service at Rhodes! Being a part of the The Bonner Center & CityLynx Programs offers work-study students the opportunity to engage in meaningful service in the Memphis community while getting paid through their financial aid package. Students will work with a variety of Memphis partners including:

  • Snowden School: you will work with students in Snowden Elementary/Middle and assist school programming.
  • Room in the Inn: you will work as the Front Desk Volunteer for Room in the Inn – an ecumenical ministry that serves people experiencing homelessness.
  • Memphis Animal Services: you will work as Volunteer Onboarding and Events Coordinator for Memphis Animal Services – a municipal animal agency that provides services and sheltering for pets.
  • Church Health Center: You will work as Front Desk Volunteer for Church Health – a non-profit, faith-based health center.
  • V&E Greenline: You will manage and supervise activities of community volunteers for V&E Greenline – an urban trail that provides natural space for walking, running, exercising, bike riding, and observing wildlife.
  • Memphis Crisis Center: You will work as Administrative Assistant for Memphis Crisis Center – a volunteer-based agency that provides free and confidential crisis services and suicide prevention via telephone.
  • Refugee Empowerment Program: Help students of R.E.P to learn English and excel in the classroom. R.E.P is a team that empowers Memphis refugees, immigrants and their children to thrive in the US.
  • Memphis Athletics Ministries: M.A.M provides Christ-centered mentoring programs for youth, age 8 to 18, in economically challenged neighborhoods across the city of Memphis. You will help M.A.M students through supporting them academically and participating in games and activities.
  • Knowledge Quest: Assist Knowledge Quest in equipping youth and their families to maximize their potential through intellectual and character development.
  • Latino Memphis: Mentoring one-on-one lessons with high school student in the area, or translate for the lawyers at the Immigrant Rights Defense Center.
  • Playhouse on the Square: You will usher for productions and special events of Playhouse on the Square – a theater for touring and resident shows.

In addition, students will also attend required monthly reflection meetings with other service students to engage in discussion about service, social justice, and leadership. Students will have mileage reimbursed or Uber access, are paid for transportation time, and are paid at a higher rate. This is also a great opportunity to connect with the greater Memphis community. Minimum Qualifications:

Incoming or continuing student at Rhodes College; excellent communication skills; ability to work both in team and individual environments (be able to take initiative); flexible and hardworking attitude.  Must have an award of Federal Work study.
