Position Overview:
The Summer Student Assistant –Student Communities plays a vital role in supporting the
initiatives of the Office of Student Communities (OSC) at Rhodes College. This position is ideal
for a student passionate about supporting first-generation students, fostering a sense of
community and belonging, and contributing to engagement efforts across campus. The RSA will
assist in the planning, coordination, and execution of various programs, events, and services
aimed at enhancing the student experience for underrepresented groups, with a special focus
on first-generation students.
Key Responsibilities:
First-Generation Student Support:
- Monitor the RhodesFirst Email: Respond to student inquiries and provide timely
updates on events, resources, and opportunities for first-generation students.
- Develop & Facilitate Monthly Curriculum: Help create and facilitate educational and
interactive programs to support first-generation students’ academic and personal
development.
- Assist in Grant Research & Data Collection: Support research efforts to identify grant
opportunities to fund student programs and assist in collecting data from event
participants for reporting purposes.
ACCESS Mentors Support:
− Monitor ACCESS Email: Respond to student inquiries and provide timely updates on
events, resources, and opportunities for mentors and mentees.
− Assist in planning the ACCESS Mentor’s Orientation, Recruitment, and Spring
Conference:
− Develop Monthly Curriculum: Help create and facilitate educational and interactive
programs to support first-generation students’ academic and personal development.
− Assist in Grant Research & Data Collection: Support research efforts to identify
grant opportunities to fund student programs and assist in collecting data from
event participants for reporting purposes.
Cultural Orgs Support:
− Organize, Setup, and Participate in Cultural Org events
− Serve as a point of contact between the cultural orgs and the Office of I/D
Unity Lounge Management:
− Assist in monitoring the functionality of the lounge
General Office Support:
- Mail Runs & Office Maintenance: Provide administrative assistance by supporting mail
distribution, event setups, and ensuring the office environment is well-organized.
- Assist with Belonging is a Big Diehl Activities: Collaborate with office staff to plan and
execute activities focused on fostering a sense of belonging for all students.
Desired Skills and Qualifications:
- Enrollment at Rhodes College: Must be a current student, preferably with an interest
in student affairs, diversity, or social justice.
- Passion for Diversity & Inclusion: A genuine interest in supporting first-generation and
underrepresented student populations.
- Strong Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication abilities,
with attention to detail.
- Organizational Skills: Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and meet
deadlines.
- Event Planning & Coordination: Experience in organizing events, programs, or
activities, with attention to detail and an ability to work well under pressure.
- Social Media & Marketing Knowledge: Familiarity with social media platforms and
basic graphic design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Suite) is a plus.
- Team-Oriented: A collaborative mindset and the ability to work effectively with peers,
faculty, and staff.
- Proactive & Self-Motivated: Ability to work independently and take initiative in a
dynamic work environment.
