FAQs

Do I need an appointment?

Appointments are recommended for all meetings to ensure that staff are able to meet with a large number of students. For a same-day or urgent appointment, please email to find out about potential availability. Click here to schedule an appointment.

Can you excuse my absences?

SO&S cannot excuse absences. We are able to send your faculty an Academic Emergency Notification for situations in which you are unable to do so yourself (i.e. hospitalization). Staff can help coach you in communicating with your faculty and guidance on college academic policies.

Can you help with non-academic issues?

Absolutely. SO&S is here to support your overall wellbeing, which may mean helping you to develop a support action plan.

What is a support action plan?

This is an approach designed to assist students who may be facing challenges that impact multiple life areas. Plans are focused on the student’s goals and aims to break down steps in order to meet the goals. They often involve assessment, resource coordination, and personalized planning. Support action plans are evaluated by follow-up services and may include adjustments.

Is SO&S able to partner or present to faculty, staff, and student organizations?

Yes! The Director has partnered and presented on topics such as SO&S services, recognizing and reporting students of concern, and wholistic self-care. Please email to learn about availability.

Are services confidential?

While SO&S will work to preserve your privacy, services are governed by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). This means information can be shared with officials and entities whom have a need to know. The staff are mandated reporters and are required to disclose information related to sex/gender discrimination. Additionally, staff may limit a student’s right to self-determination when the student’s actions pose a serious, foreseeable, and imminent risk to themselves or others.
