Internships at Rhodes

Internships translate learning into action.

Would you like to host a Rhodes intern for a semester?  Academic internships are a way for students to build connections between concepts from the classroom and real-world industry experiences. This allows students to refine their skills and build on their experiences. Rhodes students are qualified for countless professional activities including accounting, research, technical writing, marketing, and data analytics to name just a few.

Rhodes students participating in the Academic Internship program work 10 hours per week during the fall or spring semester (approximately 140 total hours) and receive academic credit. Academic Internships can be paid or unpaid but must meet the guidelines listed below to ensure the internship provides a valuable academic and professional experience.

  • The intern’s work must be project-oriented. No more than 25% of the work should involve clerical responsibilities (such as copying, answering phones or cold-calls, scheduling, filing and typing). Extended research online without guidance is also not appropriate.
  • The intern must report to a professional staff member with significant industry experience, not a clerical staff member.
  • The intern supervisor must meet with the intern at the beginning of the term to provide an orientation and explain responsibilities and expectations
  • The supervisor is encouraged to provide feedback throughout the internship.  A formal evaluation will be requested by CCPD at the end of the semester.

What can you expect from your intern?

  • The intern is typically a junior or senior (sophomores on a limited basis) with at least a 2.5 GPA.  The student must also have approval from their faculty internship supervisor, who determines a student’s preparedness for an internship.
  • The student is expected to work 10 hours per week for about 14 weeks.  The intern must inform the supervisor of requested time off and arrange to make up time missed.
  • The intern must abide by the employer’s policies regarding conduct, dress, and protocol.
  • The intern is expected to complete all assignments in a thorough and timely fashion.
  • Throughout the internship term, the student is encouraged to seek feedback from the supervisor.  The student will complete a written evaluation of the internship experience at its conclusion.
