Name Changes
Rhodes' systems permit the following courses of actions:
Preferred Name:
Students can change their preferred names at any time. This can be reflected on the student directory, which contains class rosters and housing assignments. Rhodes is able to use individuals’ preferred names during the graduation ceremony and on the student’s diploma. This process will also update the student’s email account to be reflected of their correct name. Additionally, the student is able to be issued a new college ID with updated information upon request from the Rhodes Express office. If there is not a legal name change, Rhodes is unable to change the legal name as printed on official records, such as Clearinghouse reports, transcripts, and financial aid documents. To change your preferred name, students may fill out a work order on the Topdesk website.
Official Name and Sex: Students can change their official names and sex in Banner as follows:
- Official changes to student names and gender must be based on official documentation of those changes, since changes to official name or sex within the Rhodes’ system without having made the same change(s) with the government can lead to problems with financial aid, tax forms, and other legal documents.
- Students must provide a copy of the documentation for the college’s files. Documentation should be sent to the Registrar; the changes are then processed in Data Services.
- The college’s official data will reflect students’ legal status.
Gender Inclusive Housing
Rhodes currently has Gender Inclusive spaces in apartment units. A gender inclusive housing option is one in which two or more students mutually agree to share a multiple-occupancy bedroom, studio, suite or apartment regardless of students’ sex or gender.
- The spaces are located in identified spaces across campus.
- All members of the suite/apartment must agree to the arrangement and are encouraged to communicate with their families. Rhodes College Department of Residence Life will not communicate directly with families in regard to students’ housing assignments.
- Students will not be required to reveal their reasons for opting to live in gender inclusive housing.
- This option is not intended for and is highly discouraged for students involved in romantic relationships.
- Gender Inclusive spaces will be selected during the room selection process.
- Students should plan to participate in housing selection process with their intended roommates during the appropriate schedule time.
