Using a range of evocative materials, Phillips recalls and reconstructs a transformative moment in her life. Through its poetic sensitivity to material and place, the work builds on personal narrative to raise questions about memory and human experience. Phillips says “Roxanne’s Rescue is…a memorial to certain experiences, and to a person who was instrumental in my development. I was thinking about that moment when as a young person you are at the threshold of discovering your own sexuality. The work is a balance of sensuality and innocence, awkwardness and precision, obtained through a process of using the materials to trigger associations, creating an immediate, tactile, sensual and emotional response.
