Supplemental Instruction

What is Supplemental Instruction?

What is Supplemental Instruction?

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a peer-led academic support program that helps students succeed in challenging courses through collaborative learning. SI provides regularly scheduled study sessions where students can review course material, practice problem-solving, compare notes, and develop effective learning strategies alongside their peers.

Unlike tutoring, SI focuses on helping students learn how to learn. Sessions are interactive, engaging, and designed to build confidence while reinforcing course concepts introduced in class.

SI is free, voluntary, and open to all students enrolled in supported courses.

Why attend SI?

Students who regularly participate in SI often:

  • Gain a deeper understanding of course content
  • Improve study strategies and academic skills
  • Increase confidence in challenging subjects
  • Learn from classmates in a supportive environment
  • Prepare more effectively for quizzes and exams
  • Build connections with peers and campus resources

Whether you're struggling with a particular topic or simply want to earn the strongest grade possible, SI can help you reach your academic goals.

What is an SI Leader?

SI Leaders are successful students who have previously excelled in the course they support. They are trained peer educators who attend class, take notes, and facilitate weekly SI sessions.

SI Leaders do not re-lecture or provide answers. Instead, they guide students through activities and discussions that promote critical thinking, collaboration, and active learning.

SI Leaders help students:

  • Organize and review course material
  • Practice problem-solving techniques
  • Develop effective study habits
  • Prepare for exams and assignments
  • Build confidence as independent learners

What happens during an SI session?

Every SI session is designed to be active, engaging, and focused on student success. Depending on the course, SI Leaders may use:

  • Practice questions and problem-solving activities
  • Small group discussions
  • Concept mapping and visual learning strategies
  • Review games and interactive activities
  • Test preparation exercises
  • Note comparison and organization techniques

Students are encouraged to ask questions, share ideas, and learn from one another in a collaborative environment.

Who should attend?

Everyone.

SI is not just for students who are struggling. Many high-performing students attend SI regularly to strengthen their understanding of course concepts and maintain strong grades.

SI can benefit students who:

  • Want additional practice with course material
  • Learn best through discussion and collaboration
  • Are preparing for exams
  • Want to improve their study skills
  • Are looking for academic support and community

Benefits Beyond the Classroom

Participating in SI helps students develop skills that extend beyond a single course, including:

  • Critical thinking
  • Time management
  • Collaboration and communication
  • Problem-solving
  • Independent learning strategies

These skills contribute to long-term academic success and help students become more confident learners.
