Memphis World

Clough-Hanson Gallery at Rhodes College is very excited to announce its first show of the season:  Memphis World

Memphis World will run from September 5th through October 4, 2008.

The reception for the show will be held in the gallery from 6 - 8 p.m., Friday September 5, 2008.

Memphis World is a two part exhibition mounted by the Clough-Hanson Gallery and the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art.  In 2006, the museum acquired 222 photographs from the Memphis World, an African American newspaper published from 1931 to 1973. These photographs provide a fascinating portrait of African American life in Memphis through the lens of such photographers as Ernest Withers, Mark Stansbury, R. Earl Williams, and Hooks Brothers Photography.  Nineteen of the photographs will be included in the exhibition at Rhodes College.

A full list of works from the exhibition and images of the works are available upon request.

Clough-Hanson Gallery is located inside Clough Hall on the Rhode College campus.  The gallery is open from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.  The gallery is closed on Sundays and Mondays.  Admission to the gallery is always free.
