As Rhodes advances toward a campus-wide career ecosystem, faculty and staff will play an essential role in preparing students for success beyond graduation. The Career Champions program is designed to empower faculty and staff to integrate career readiness into their unique roles and interactions with students. Through a comprehensive Career Toolkit, which will be developed by faculty and staff, participants will have access to practical tools, resources, and services that make it easy to incorporate career development into advising, teaching, mentoring, and other student experiences. Together, we can create a collaborative culture where career readiness is embedded throughout the Rhodes experience.

Career Readiness in Your Syllabus

One way to intentionally infuse career readiness is to include career-relevant language in your syllabi.  Adding the career language below into your syllabi is a great step in helping students recognize the valuable career-related skills and competencies they are gaining in the courses you teach.

Identifying and articulating the NACE Career Competencies and transferable skills you acquire in this course and during your time at Rhodes are critical to your career success. In this course, you have opportunities to enhance and gain the Career Competencies and skills that employers and graduate programs are seeking. This will occur via assignments and class conversations and will contribute to your ability to identify and articulate these competencies and skills when applying for leadership roles, internships, jobs, graduate school, fellowships, and more. 

Note: As the Career Integration Council works to fully develop the Career Toolkit, additional syllabi examples will be provided by faculty that incorporate career language and align course outcomes with the NACE Competencies. 

Career Integration with Canvas 

Embedding career activities into your course or co-curricular experience is easy through the Career & Professional Development Canvas Course modules. To assist with the integration of career development into the classroom and co-curricular experience, CCPD has designed a series of modules that Rhodes faculty and staff can add to their existing Canvas courses. 

These modules completement the great work that is already happening inside of the classrooms and through co-curricular activities and experiential learning experiences. Faculty and staff are encouraged to utilize these modules as assignments and reflection activities.  Each module comes equipped with an introduction, learning outcomes, resources, action items, and assessments. 

Module One: Introduction to Career Services: This introductory module walks students through the services and resources offered by the CCPD and connects them with our office.

Module Two: Self, Major, and Career Exploration: Through this module, students complete exercises to identify a career pathway that fits their unique skills, values, personality and interests. 

Module Three: Exploring Careers While Gaining Experience: In order to be career-ready, it is essential to gain relevant experience that aligns with career goals.  Through this module, students will learn about the variety of ways to gain experience while solidifying career goals and exploring occupations.

Module Four: Resume Development: A well-drafted resume separates good from great. This module will introduce the best practices in crafting a strong resume.

Module Five: Interview Skills: Through this module, students learn the steps for crafting targeted interview answers while practicing interview skills. 

Module Six: The Career Launch: In this module, students will learn about techniques and resources to assist them in securing employment upon graduation. We will review networking techniques, explore avenues for locating opportunities and identify resources to use in successfully obtaining job or graduate school placement.
