My name is Abby Carter, and I am from Nashville, Tennessee! I am on the PA-track as a senior Biology major with a concentration in Biomedical Science and a minor in Philosophy, and this semester I will be returning as a Supplemental Instruction Leader for MATH 211 (or Intro Statistics) with Dr. Kyle Dempsey. Becoming an SI has been one of my favorite parts about my Rhodes experience, and to me there is no feeling better than watching my students grasp concepts that they previously struggled with. I love watching the students I work with build their confidence and perform well on tests. A fun fact about me is that I speak Hungarian and love to cook fun new recipes!

My name is Ada Collins and I am a senior double majoring in physics and mathematics. This semester, I will be an SI for Dr. Erika Parr's MATH 223 class, which I am incredibly excited for. Multivariable Calculus is a challenging course, but it has so many different applications and connects a lot of past math topics; as an SI, I am looking forward to guiding these connections and seeing the moment that it all falls into place for students. I have a lot of experience applying calculus in physics contexts, specifically in my high-energy particle physics research. Beyond math and science, I love hiking, embroidery, and making jewelry. I am looking forward to a great semester!

Supplemental Instruction has been invaluable in my own math journey. I have felt incredibly stuck and frustrated, as all math students have at one time or another, and my SI leader at the time has helped me significantly. I love that SI normalizes asking for help, as there is nothing wrong with confusion or lack of understanding. Math is a language and a journey and takes practice and time. I love the outdoors and spent the summer in Florence as an environmental conservation intern!

My name is Anna Callender and I am a senior majoring in Neuroscience with minors in Psychology and Health Equity. I am the SI for Psychology Statistics (PSYC211) this semester. One thing I love about SI is connecting with students in an academic context and being able to help others reach their goals. SI is special because it offers support outside of the professors from a fellow student who shares many of your experiences. It fits in super well with the environment of Rhodes, as attending a small liberal arts school allows us to have easy access to more personalized academic resources. Being an SI for the past three semesters has also been preparing me for my academic career after graduation, as I hope to pursue a PhD in clinical neuropsychology.

What I love about SI is that it creates a welcoming environment where students can learn together, ask questions, and build confidence. I believe SI helps students strengthen their understanding of course material while developing strong study skills and problem-solving skills. It also creates a supportive community that encourages students to succeed academically and personally. Things I love about Rhodes and Memphis is going for runs in Overton Park, spending time with friends in the evening, and going to Hive downtown!

Hello, my name is Christopher, and I am from Houston, Texas. I am a senior Biochemistry and Molecular Biology major, and I am the assigned SI for BIOL 131, or Introductory Biology Lab. I am on the pre-med track and have taken many upper-level biology and chemistry courses, including Cell Biology and Biochemistry. Supplemental Instruction is a very beneficial tool because it gives students additional time and opportunities to learn and understand the material covered in class. I remember using SI as a freshman as a good way to catch up on notes I may have missed during class or simply ask questions with my peers around so that they could learn along with me. SI can help students because it gives them the opportunity to ask questions and learn from upperclassmen who have already completed the course. SI is a fantastic opportunity for students to come together, ask questions, and learn as a group.

I see SI as a way to give students a comfortable environment to ask questions, work through tough concepts, and learn from their peers without the pressures of a traditional classroom. I think SI is great for not only building confidence in the class material but also fostering relationships between students. Things I love about Memphis is how much the city resolves around food and music. There is always a new restaurant or live music venue to check out, and each part of the city has its own personality.

I consider SI as a wonderful opportunity to get engaged into class material, especially if the coursework is challenging. Unlike traditional lectures the SI session provides a completely different environment to students which helps reduce the academic pressure on their shoulders. Hi, my name is Hugh Ferguson. I am a rising senior majoring in biomathematics, and I am excited to be your SI for CHEM 212: Organic Chemistry II. I like that SI creates a collaborative environment where students can work through difficult concepts together rather than simply memorizing material. My goal is to help students develop study strategies that will help them succeed in this course and beyond. I love finding new spots around town and exploring the city. I’m Jeongeum Woo, majoring in Neuroscience and minoring in Music. Neuroscience might seem intimidating at first, but attending SI sessions regularly might help you a lot. Through reviewing and discussion with your peers about class materials will provide confidence in your study. This summer, I spent my time studying inhibitory interaction between astrocytes at St. Jude, and it was a great chance to apply what I learned at Rhodes. I hope this course can also be your fuel for next steps!

What I love most about SI is being able to create a welcoming space where students feel comfortable asking questions and working through challenging material together. I love seeing the concept come to life in the students' eyes. A topic that seemed so daunting in class lectures suddenly makes sense, and I can see the click happen as soon as it does. It's an awesome feeling! One of my favorite Memphis spots is the Botanical Gardens. I love to stroll the Botanical Gardens (or study there) when I can. It's a super refreshing atmosphere, which makes it easier to clear my mind and focus.

What I love about SI and how I see SI helping students: My favorite part of this role is improving the classroom experience for students and helping facilitate academic growth. Throughout my time at Rhodes, I would regularly attend SI sessions, and I found that each session significantly enhanced my understanding of the material. As an SI, I want to provide the same opportunity for students and help build stronger study habits. I’m involved in research with the Psychology department here at Rhodes and am happy to give advice for anyone who might be interested in research or psych!

I love that SI allows students to work with their peers in a supportive environment. It can sometimes be stressful, especially for students newer to college, to ask their professors for help. However, SI creates a space where students can reinforce or review their knowledge of class material alongside their own classmates in ways that make them really think, rather than just being told the answers.
