WHAT IS A PEER ACADEMIC COACH?

Peer Academic Coaching is a one-on-one mentoring program designed to help students strengthen their organization, time management, and study skills. As a peer academic coach, you’ll be paired with students who want to grow as learners, meeting with them either once or regularly.

In this role, you will:

  • Provide personalized guidance to help students develop effective academic habits

  • Lead or assist with workshops on a variety of learning strategies

  • Build leadership, communication, and coaching skills that look great on a resume

  • Be part of the broader Peer Education Program (PEP) Experience

Please note: Peer academic coaching does not involve tutoring in specific course content.

 

WHAT IS THE PAY?
This is a paid on-campus position at $10.00/hour, up to 10 hours per week. The weekly work schedule includes student meetings, events, and staff meetings.

 

WHAT ARE THE RESPONSIBILITIES?

Peer academic coaches assist students with a variety of general academic skills, including time management, learning strategies, study strategies, note-taking, goal setting, and organization skills, among others.

  • Peer academic coaches meet with students via scheduled individual meetings. In these meetings, peer coaches help students use their time more efficiently, develop habits and strategies to be more effective in and out of the classroom, and connect students to academic resources.
     
  • Peer academic coaches design and facilitate workshops on differing academic skills for students each semester. 
     
  • Peer academic coaches provide tips and share resources via social media.

 

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS?

Students interested in applying to be a peer academic coach should meet all of the following requirements.

  • Be available to be a peer coach for one full academic year (Fall & Spring semesters).
     
  • Be available for training meetings in the Spring semester and during welcome week before the start of the Fall semester.
     
  • Be able to dedicate up to 10 hours a week to this position. Hours will fluctuate depending on the number of appointments and workshops.
     
  • Attend staff meetings and professional development days throughout the semester.
     
  • Must have completed at least two full semesters by the time of their start date.
     
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
     
  • Must meet the College's standards for good academic and conduct/honor code standing.
     
  • Not work concurrently as an RSA or hold other work or leadership positions that do not allow for full commitment to this position.

 

WHAT IS THE HIRING PROCESS?

Students interested in the Peer Academic Coach position must submit a completed Student Leadership Application by the established deadline. An email will be sent to all students in December or January notifying them when the application period begins. After reviewing applications, we will contact students to schedule interviews.
